Humane Education—what is that? is it important? how do I do it? If you’re concerned about aspects of contemporary society and intrigued by the concept of Humane Education but not sure what it means, then you’ll want to read this book.
The author is a pioneer in the field of Humane Education, cofounder of the International Institute of Humane Education, facilitator of workshops throughout North America and author of three books. She identifies four elements that form the foundation of Humane Education: providing accurate information so students understand the consequences of their decisions as consumers and citizens; fostering curiosity, creativity and critical thinking so students can evaluate information and solve problems; instilling reverence, respect and responsibility so students will act with kindness and integrity; and offering positive choices that benefit oneself, other people, the Earth and animals so that students feel empowered to help create a more humane world.
Moving beyond values and character education, which tend to focus on interpersonal relationships, humane education acknowledges the effects of human behaviour on not only other people, but other species and the environment, and so includes concepts of sustainability and peace education.
The Power and Promise begins with information you need to understand the essence of Humane Education, but moves quickly into practical suggestions for incorporating its ideas into your teaching without the necessity for a time slot for a new subject. Specific activities are clearly outlined with suggested grade level, lesson time and materials needed, and other subject areas in which related learning outcomes are mandated. The final chapter outlines ways that Humane Education can be implemented in both elementary and secondary schools. In this age of conflict, environmental degradation and global tragedies, The Power and Promise of Humane Education offers a concrete way to move towards a more peaceful and respectful way of living. I highly recommend it.
