Homelessness is becoming an increasingly more visible issue, especially in Canadian cities, and many school children are likely to become aware of people who have less material wealth than they do. This is the story of how Lily’s family found a way to make a difference in the life of a homeless person whom they encountered on a daily basis as they walked to and from school.

At first Lily was frightened when the tall man in a raggedy coat approached to sell Lily’s mother a newspaper, and she chose to take the bus home to avoid him in the days that followed. But when it snowed for the first time, Lily wanted to walk home. This time when the man offered a paper, Lily noticed how thin his clothes were and how cold he looked. With the help of her parents and others in their community, Lily put together a bag of warm clothes and presented them to the Paper Man.

This heartwarming story was inspired by the author’s son, who once wanted to invite a homeless man to stay with them in their Toronto apartment. Beautiful illustrations by Renné Benoit capture the essence of the story.
