Get Smart Get Active Bike Tour

University of Victoria student, Tyler Duncan, has committed to promoting the importance of Quality Daily Physical Education to the healthy development of children and youth by undertaking a Cross-Canada bike ride. On March 31, 2008 Tyler put his foot to the peddle in Victoria, BC where he began his 7000 km trek from Victoria, BC to St. John’s, NL. Along the way Tyler plans to talk to students, community groups and policy makers about the need for Quality Daily Physical Education programs for all Canadian children and youth as a critical intervention to reverse the obesity and physical inactivity that is currently plaguing our nation. Schools are encouraged to join forces with the Get Smart, Get Active Tour in a variety of ways:

  • Promote the Tour – Post information about the tour and provide links to the Get Smart, Get Active Tour’s website in your newsletters and websites.

  • Word of Mouth – Spread the word by emailing your partners, colleagues and friends.  Encourage them to join Get Smart, Get Active Tour Facebook group.

  • Cheer Tyler on as he makes his way through your community – your encouragement will make peddling that bike a little easier. Better yet get on your bike and peddle with him through your community.  Or get your community to get out on their bikes as he rides by.

  • Have Tyler speak to your school/community about the importance of Physical Education in the lives of children. Talk it up once he leaves – we need advocates who will continue to deliver the message long after Tyler has completed his Tour.

  • Log on to the Get Smart, Get Active Tour website and show Tyler we're all behind him – he will be checking it while en route!

  • Donate to the cause – create a campaign in your community that donates to the Tour for every kilometre he peddles – or challenge your school board or province to match your contribution. Donations are being accepted to support the Get Smart, Get Active Tour and to ensure a lasting legacy that will support Physical Education advocacy and programs in Canada.
